Per capita consumption grew 26% in Brazil, from 2.13 liters in 2019 to 2.70 liters from January to September this year
Brazilian people never drank as much wine as in 2020. Between January and September of this year, per capita consumption had a historical increase of almost one bottle: an average of 2.68 liters was consumed per person over 18 years old – growth of 26% compared to same period of 2019, which had the mark of 2.13 liters. The data are contained in a study developed by Ideal Consulting and reveal the good moment of the sector.
The wine business increased by 37.2% from January to September 2020. It went from 265.3 million liters of wines and sparkling wines in the same period of 2019 to 363.9 million liters. In the months of June and July alone, sales reached 60 million liters and 63.4 million liters in the country, respectively – a historic mark. Similar performance was achieved in October 2019, with the sale of 47.7 million liters.
The survey also points out that the consumption of Brazilian table wine increased by 44%, and Brazilian fine wine more than doubled – an increase of 106% in the period. The imported ones had an increase of 22% in sales. Reds lead consumer preference, with 74%; followed by white wines (19%) and rosés (7%) – which are already gaining space among consumers and have grown by 35% this year.
“An important fact to be considered by all the links in the chain is that the fine wine market doubled in Brazil in 2020”, highlights the president of ABS-RS, Orestes de Andrade Jr. “Wine consumption was accelerated, with the conquering almost one bottle per person this year. It is a historic result, a dream that comes true ”, completes the president of ABS-RS.
Among the factors mentioned for the appreciation of wine consumption are the fact that people have sought the pleasure of more refined and family gastronomy, in addition to the possibility of direct purchase from distributors and the increase in e-commerce. For Ideal Consulting’s CEO, Felipe Galtaroça, as the time to go to the restaurant became at home, the demand for wine was accentuated. “Linked to gastronomy, people look for pleasures at home. The fact of not being responsible for driving and the lower cost of the product for consumption at home also helped ”, he points out.
“Planning is essential to keep growing or at least preserving part of the space conquered for wines”, comments Marcos Milaneze, director of Milanez & Milaneze, the company that makes the WSA.
Wine South America is scheduled to take place from 22 to 24 September 2021.
